Asphalt shingle on the outside. Solar shingle in the field.
GAF Energy Timberline Solar is a PV-active laminated solar shingle that installs with the same nail pattern as a standard GAF Timberline HDZ asphalt shingle. PV-active shingles are intermixed with passive Timberline HDZ in non-solar areas of the roof, so the field reads as a regular asphalt shingle roof with photovoltaic woven into the south-facing exposure.
Each PV-active shingle produces 45W DC. Each shingle has its own Enphase IQ8H microinverter integrated into the underside of the laminate — this means partial shading on a single shingle does not affect production on adjacent shingles. The string-inverter limitation of older bolt-on solar systems is not a constraint here.
Theo Ramaswamy, Helios's co-founder, was on the GAF Timberline Solar launch product team in 2015 during his five years at GAF as a residential rep on the California Central Coast. He was on the prototype-field-tests team in 2015-2016 before the product hit market in 2022. Helios has installed 62 GAF Timberline Solar systems since 2020. Average system size: 7.4 kWdc.
GAF Timberline Solar is the right answer for homeowners who want the visual of a conventional asphalt shingle roof but with integrated PV, for homes with partial shading where microinverter architecture matters, and for budget-conscious homeowners — GAF is typically 25-35% less per installed watt than Tesla Solar Roof.
Why a homeowner picks Timberline Solar over the Tesla Solar Roof.
Three reasons recur. First, aesthetic — Tesla Solar Roof is a uniform dark glass field; GAF Timberline Solar reads as a regular asphalt shingle roof with solar in part of the field. The homeowner who wants the look of a Timberline HDZ roof picks GAF.
Second, price — GAF Timberline Solar is typically 25-35% less per installed watt than Tesla Solar Roof. A 9 kWdc GAF install runs roughly the same total cost as a 7 kWdc Tesla install. For budget-constrained projects this is decisive.
Third, partial-shading flexibility — GAF's microinverter-per-shingle architecture handles partial shade better than Tesla Solar Roof's string-of-tiles architecture. Homes with mature trees or neighboring structures casting morning or evening shade on part of the roof field are better candidates for GAF.

What a GAF Timberline Solar actually costs in 2026.
GAF Timberline Solar pricing is typically lower than Tesla Solar Roof. The variables are the same — roof complexity, square footage of the PV-active field, number of Powerwall 3 batteries specified, panel-upgrade requirement, PG&E fees. The following ranges are real Helios install pricing in 2026 dollars, before federal Section 25D ITC.
All prices include tear-off of existing roofing, full GAF Timberline Solar installation, Enphase IQ8H microinverters, specified Powerwall 3 storage, PG&E interconnection paperwork, and permit. Federal Section 25D ITC (30%) typically reduces final cost by $15,600 – $47,400.
A six-day install, beginning to end.
GAF Timberline Solar installs faster than Tesla Solar Roof — typically six working days versus eight — because the shingles install with the same nail pattern as standard asphalt and do not require the more complex flashing detail work of a tempered-glass tile field.
Site protection + tear-off
Days 1–2. Scaffold, driveway protection, dumpster. Full tear-off of existing roofing. Deck inspection and replacement of any rotted plywood. GAF synthetic underlayment.

GAF Timberline Solar, the six questions homeowners ask first.
How does GAF Timberline Solar differ from a Tesla Solar Roof?
GAF reads as a regular asphalt shingle roof with PV in part of the field. Tesla reads as a uniform dark glass tile field. GAF is typically 25-35% less per installed watt. GAF uses microinverter-per-shingle architecture; Tesla uses string architecture. Different aesthetics, different price points, different shading tolerance.
What is the wattage per GAF solar shingle?
Each PV-active GAF Energy Timberline Solar shingle produces 45W DC. A typical residential system uses 130–220 shingles for a 5.85–9.9 kWdc system.
Does each shingle have its own microinverter?
Yes. Helios installs Enphase IQ8H microinverters integrated with the GAF Timberline Solar shingle. Each shingle has its own microinverter — partial shading on one shingle does not affect production on adjacent shingles.
Can I mix solar shingles with regular asphalt shingles?
Yes — and that is the design intent. GAF Timberline Solar shingles intermix with passive GAF Timberline HDZ in the same field. Only the south-facing exposure typically gets PV-active shingles; north and side fields stay passive HDZ.
What is the GAF Golden Pledge warranty?
GAF Golden Pledge is GAF's strongest warranty tier — 25 years on the shingle material, 25 years on workmanship, and 50-year algae resistance. Available only through GAF Master Elite Solar installers like Helios.
How does this compare to bolt-on rack-and-rail solar on a Timberline HDZ roof?
Bolt-on solar penetrates the roof 80+ times with stanchions. GAF Timberline Solar has zero stanchion penetrations through the field — the PV-active shingle installs with the same nail pattern as the passive Timberline HDZ. One installation. One warranty. Same look as a regular asphalt shingle roof.
