SYSTEM 01

Tesla Solar Roof V3

A single integrated tempered-glass shingle field where active PV tiles and inactive tiles are visually indistinguishable. The inverter is a Tesla Energy Gateway; the storage is a Powerwall 3; the monitoring is the Tesla app.

Priya Achterberg was on the Tesla Solar Roof launch team in 2016. Helios has installed 87 since 2017 — more than any other firm in Northern California.

GAF Energy Timberline Solar

A PV-active laminated solar shingle that installs with the same nail pattern as standard GAF Timberline HDZ — intermixed with passive Timberline HDZ in non-solar field areas. Looks like an asphalt roof with PV woven in.

Theo Ramaswamy was on the GAF Timberline Solar launch product team in 2015. Helios has installed 62 since 2020.

SunStyle Integrated PV Shingle

A Swiss-engineered BIPV diamond-pattern tile, used heavily on European modern architecture and recently approved for California. Reads as architectural metal scales from the street.

WHY WE DO ONLY THIS

The roof IS the solar.
The solar IS the roof.

Most California solar installers will sell you a rack-and-rail bolt-on PV system mounted over your existing asphalt shingle roof. That system will work — it will produce kilowatt-hours. It will also penetrate your roof eighty or more times with stanchions, void any remaining manufacturer warranty on your shingles, require its own removal and reinstallation when you eventually re-roof in fifteen or twenty years, and visually present as solar panels bolted onto a roof.

  • NO ROOF PENETRATIONS WHERE THE SOLAR MEETS THE FIELD.

    A Tesla Solar Roof has zero stanchion penetrations through the field. The PV is integrated into the tiles themselves, sealed to a continuous waterproof underlayment.

  • THE ROOF AND THE SOLAR ARE A SINGLE WARRANTY.

    Tesla warranties the roof, the tiles, the power inverter, and the production as one integrated system. There is no "the roofer says it's the solar guy and the solar guy says it's the roofer."

  • ONE INSTALLATION, NOT TWO.

    Roof + solar in a single 5- to 9-day install — not "first the roof, then six months later the solar." One permit, one inspection cycle, one PG&E witness.

  • VISUAL INTEGRATION.

    From the street, a Helios install looks like a roof, not a roof with panels on it. The aesthetic argument is real and is the reason 70% of our customers pick integrated.

ON THE PG&E NEM 3.0 RULE AND WHY WE QUOTE BATTERY STORAGE ON EVERY PROJECT

NEM 3.0 changed the math. Battery storage is now the answer.

California's PG&E switched its solar billing structure from Net Energy Metering 2.0 to Net Billing Tariff (NEM 3.0) in April 2023. Under the old NEM 2.0, every kilowatt-hour you exported to the grid was credited at the same retail rate you paid for kilowatt-hours you imported — about $0.43/kWh in the Sacramento Valley peak season.

Under NEM 3.0, exports are credited at an avoided-cost rate that averages roughly $0.08/kWh — a 75% to 80% reduction in export value. The economic answer is no longer "export every excess kWh to the grid." The economic answer is now "store every excess kWh in a home battery and consume it during the 4pm–9pm peak window when retail rates are highest."

Every Helios quote since May 2023 has included at least 13.5 kWh of battery storage (one Tesla Powerwall 3 or equivalent). This is not an upsell. It is the only configuration that makes a 2026 California solar installation produce a reasonable internal rate of return.

Our warehouse is in Sacramento at 3840 Power Inn Road. We install across the Sacramento Valley, the Bay Area East Bay, and the Sierra Nevada foothills up to about 3,000 feet elevation. The geographic constraint is real — integrated solar roofing is logistics-intensive (a Tesla Solar Roof is 4–7 pallets of glass tile arriving on a single truck), and we keep the radius tight to keep the schedule honest.
